FIGHTING INFECTION – IT’S IN OUR HANDS

A group of children from Portsmouth have become the face of an innovative new campaign to encourage people to help stop the bugs and keep hands clean.

The local children, who are featured in Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust’s Infection Prevention Campaign - ‘Stop the Bugs’, were invited with their families to officially launch the campaign with the Trust’s Chief Executive, Ursula Ward, The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Portsmouth Councillor Mike Blake and Mrs Susie Sanderson and the local media. They then toured the hospital to see the posters in which they appear on display.

The campaign has been designed to give clear messages about the washing and cleaning of hands and good hygiene behaviour when visiting hospitals. To do this the Trust is using buses, bus shelters and billboards throughout Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Petersfield and Waterlooville and signs around the hospital sites.

Ursula Ward, Chief Executive of the Trust said “We are aware of public concerns around infection. This campaign will prompt people to think carefully about basic hand hygiene to support the work everyone has done within the Trust to reduce our infection rates. We would like to thank the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress for coming along and supporting our launch event.”

A nurse from the Trust’s Infection Prevention Team will also be visiting local schools to explain the importance of keeping hands clean so that children understand from an early age. They will be shown how best to wash their hands and in return will be awarded a special certificate to take home.

Maggie MacIsaac, Director of Strategy and Partnerships said: “The message is a clear and simple one approached in an original way. We look forward to the campaign being fully implemented and realising the benefits. We will monitor closely reactions to the initial stages of the campaign to see how this can be built upon in the future.”
